Sponsorship of Biblical Counseling Course
The Jedidiah Counselor & Charitable Trust has had the opportunity to work with a spectrum of Christian counselees who have not been able to receive spiritual guidance and support from their churches. There have been reports of a lack of resource or focus devoted to counseling, or that pastoral ministry staff, while well meaning, may not have gone through the requisite training and are thereby not competent to counsel.
The Bible teaches us that continued spiritual discipleship & development of both new converts and long-time Christians is of paramount importance. Christian sanctification is a progressive process and an important concept that should be grasped and lived out by professed Christians. It is much more than Sunday church attendance and fellowshipping activities. It is in keeping with the Apostle Paul’s exhortation in Galatians 6:1 and can be facilitated through the training of qualified people to help others apply biblical teachings to their lives in the direction that honors God.
Much of the problems faced by Christian counselees stem from their lack of understanding of their Christian faith resulting in unbiblical responses to life, which then lead to bad feelings and failure to cope. Manifestation of unbiblical Christian living can be gleaned from the lives of carnal Christians who behave no differently from unbelievers; or those who are legalistic and self-righteousness; or those who are consistently functioning at sub-optimal levels. In particular, there is oftentimes a lack of understanding about the issue of SIN – (i) personal sins (sin of commission vs sin of omission); (ii) sins inflicted on us by others and (iii) sins arising from living in a depraved world – and how to overcome them. In the final analysis, many professed Christians are poor witnesses of their faith and need to be guided by Biblical teaching.
Being teachers is a very high calling not to be taken lightly because those who teach will be judged more strictly (James 3:1). Therefore it is important to equip pastoral ministry staff and other committed lay persons with the right biblical training, to ensure that they can minister the word of God effectively.
